"The Lorenzi family's cellar put on another sterling performance, again sending the Chianti Classico Riserva to our finals. The 04 edition has a tempting nose of spice and red fruits-led aromatics before the palate progresses delightfully to an admirably flavourful finish. This all-around improvement in quality is hardly suprising, given the superbly sited vines in the southern part of Chianti Classico, the Herculean efforts that have gone into replanting and the construction of a new cellar. The 04 Sandiavolo is as good as ever. The blend of equal parts of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and merlot has lent it intriguing aromatics, mouthfilling body and lovely balance while the Chianti Classico 05 puts the accent on elegance, albeit with slightly rugged tannins that are not quite offset by the structure."
